Derry Public Library Summer Reading Program Schedule 2014

June 23-August 15 Fizz! Boom! Read! 


Join us throughout the summer for the following weekly storytimes:

Preschool Storytime Mondays – 10:00 a.m.

Story program for children ages 3-5 years old and their caregivers.  Lively time of sharing books, songs, puppets, nursery rhymes, early literacy and pre-school activities. No registration required. With Miss Kathryn.

Hood Park Storytimes

Join us at Hood Park every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for summer books and stories from July 1-August 5. All ages.

Infant Storytime Wednesdays – 10:00 a.m.

A 20-30 minute lapsit storytime for infants birth to 12 months and their caregivers. Learn fingerplays, songs and simple baby sign language to share with your babies as they sit in your lap. No registration required. With Miss Kathy.

Mother Goose On The Loose Thursdays – 10:00 a.m.

Toddler storytime for children 12 to 36 months and their caregivers, using music, fingerplays, props and movement. No registration required. With Miss Eileen

Tuesday, June 24

Gravity! Yo-Yo’s and Paper Airplanes. 1:30 p.m.

Bring your own yo-yo and explore the law of gravity by learning awesome yo-yo tricks and designing different paper airplanes. Ages 4-11 with caregiver. With Miss Kathryn.

Thursday, June 26

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: The Science of Sound 1:30 p.m.

Explore the principles of sound with the percussion family of instruments. Sing and play along with stories using woods, metals, skins and shakers. Ages 4-9 with caregiver. With Miss Eileen.


Tuesday, July 1

Creature Teachers: Live Animal Show

“Amazing Critters from Around the World”1:30 p.m.

Meet a host of amazing animals from different parts of the world, including a wallaby from “Down Under”. Our special animal ambassadors, the Creature Teachers, have lots of amazing critters to share. Don’t miss it! All ages with caregiver.

Thomas the Tank Engine Storytime 1:30 p.m.

Hop on board for this special storytime with stories, songs and movement all about trains and your favorite engine, Thomas! Stick around for the movie: Thomas and his Friends Help out. Ages 3-5 with caregiver. With Miss Kathy.

Tuesday, July 8

Lindsay and her Puppet Pals 1:30 p.m.

Join our favorite puppeteer Lindsay and her amazing menagerie of giant puppets, including a new life-sized robot for Fizz! Boom! Read! Lots of laughs and audience participation fun! All ages with caregiver.

This event is co-sponsored by the Taylor Library.

The Foolish Frog 1:30 p.m.

It’s a crazy afternoon of fabulous frog foolishness with stories music and real life frogs from the Audubon Society. Ages 4-9 with caregiver. With Miss Eileen.

Tuesday, July 15

Candy Land Party 1:30 p.m.

Weave your way through the Candy Land Forest, past the Peanut Brittle House and the Gumdrop Mountains for games, crafts and sweet treats, of course!  Ages 3-11 with caregiver. Registration required. With Miss Kathy.

Thursday, July 17

Rumble in the Jungle: Rainforests and Rain Sticks 1:30 p.m.

Help us celebrate the plants and animals of the rainforest with stories, song and dance. Let’s compose a rainforest symphony after we create our own rain sticks. Ages 5-11. Registration required. With Miss Kathy L.

Tuesday, July 22

Miss Spider’s Tea Party 1:30 p.m.

Miss Spider is hosting a very special tea party for all the bugs in the neighborhood (and you’re invited too). Listen to this classic tale of friendship and join in the tea party with buggy treats and games. Spider and bug costumes encouraged. Ages 4-8 with caregiver. With Miss Kathryn.

Disney Princess Party 1:30 p.m.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye all fair princesses in the land of Derry!  Her majesty, Queen Kathy, requests the pleasure of your royal company at a special event. Learn to be a princess with games, crafts and a photo opportunity. Costumes encouraged!  Princesses ages 4-9. Registration required.

Magician Scott Jameson1:30 p.m.

Go on a magical journey and travel through time with our amazing professional magician Scott Jameson. Witness incredible feats of magic, juggling and science. Fun for the whole family! All ages with caregiver.

Steve Blunt: Children’s Musician 6:30 p.m.

Join us for this special evening of children’s music in MacGregor Park for songs that make you Fizz! Boom! and Read! This event is sponsored by the Taylor Library, Parks and Recreation and the Derry Public Library. All ages with caregiver.

Tuesday, July 31

All the Colors of the Parachute 1:30 p.m.

Learn about the colors of the spectrum with music and parachute games. Share stories and make exploding chalk art on the sidewalk! Ages 4-11 with caregiver. With Miss Kathy L.


Tuesday, August 5

Meet Mary Poppins! 1:30 p.m.

Miss Mary Poppins has flown all the way from London by umbrella to share her wit, wisdom, and magic with the children of Derry. Don’t miss theatrical performer Linda Peck, as everyone’s favorite singing nanny with a carpet bag chock full of surprises!. All ages with caregiver.

Thursday, August 7

The Miniature world of the Borrowers 1:30 p.m.

Imagine a world where pennies make perfect dinner plates, spools of thread become tables and matchboxes become dressers!  Such is the world of the Borrowers, a family of miniature people living under the floorboards of an old house who “borrow” from the humans upstairs.  Create your own version of their miniature home. Ages 6-11 with caregiver. Registration required. With Miss Kathy.

Tuesday, August 12

Pete the Cat 1:30 p.m.

Meet Pete the groovy blue cat.  No matter where he goes he is always cool.  Whether Pete is rockin’ his school shoes or groovin’ on his buttons, it is all good.  Let’s listen to and read some of Pete’s favorite adventures, play a rousing game of Pin the Shoe on Pete, and create a Pete the Cat paper bag puppet.  Ages4 and up. With Miss Kathy L.

End of the Summer Party! 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Join us for an afternoon of special events, ice cream and crafts to close out the summer.

Friday, August 15

One Hundred Book/50 Hour Party 3:00 p.m.

When you read one hundred books or fifty hours, you’ll receive an invitation to this special party for extra motivated summer readers. Enjoy games, activities and best of all FREE books.
