Derry Public Library is once again offering a Summer Reading Program for Adults as well as for Teens and Children. The theme for the Summer is “Escape the Ordinary”, and the programs chosen are hoped to help participants do just that.
First up will be “Chocolate: The Secret Indulgence”. On Monday, June 29, Michael Cross, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Northern Essex Community College, will offer a program discussing which chemicals in chocolate elicit biochemical reactions in the human brain, making it the perfect drug! During the presentation you will also learn how to taste chocolate for quality and how to eat it, too! Since most everyone loves chocolate, attendees will be interested to know why it’s good for them, how much is healthy, and what kinds are best to eat.
Before coming to Northern Essex, Michael Cross was an instructor of chemistry and department chair at the College of Eastern Utah. He believes that education should be fun and exciting, and enjoys incorporating demonstrations and magic tricks into his teaching. He holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.
Registration is recommended for this program, but is not required. For more information call the Library at 432-6140.
