How do I get a free library card?
If you are a Derry resident, own property, or work or attend school in Derry, you are eligible for a free library card. Bring a current photo ID with up-to-date address and, if you are not a resident of Derry, proof of local employment or your school ID. If you are a new resident and your photo ID does not have your current address, you may bring in other proof of local residence such as a pay stub, utility bill, or rental agreement.
Also eligible for a free library card: Derry residents in transition - Individuals residing in Derry and currently transitioning between permanent living situations showing proof of identification and providing a valid e-mail address.
I am not a Derry resident. Can I still get a card?
Yes! If you own property, or work or attend school in Derry, you are eligible for a free library card. If you are not eligible for a free card, you may register for an out of town library card at a cost of $50 for a full year.
Can I register online for a library card?
Yes! Click here, fill out the online form and Presto! You have a digital account good for 30 days with access to our databases and cloudLibrary eBooks and eAudios, plus you can request materials from our online catalog. Come into the library with proof of residence, work or school, to get your physical card.
How old do you need to be to get a library card?
You need to be at least 5 years old to register for a library card. Children younger than twelve require a signed registration form by a parent or guardian. (Please see our Circulation Policy)
Do I need to bring my children with me to sign them up for library cards?
Yes, please bring your children when registering for their own cards.
Can I sign up my grandchild for a library card?
Parents or legal guardians must be the ones to register their children for library cards.
Why can’t you tell me what my child/spouse/parent has checked out?
The Derry Public Library adheres to New Hampshire’s Library User Records Confidentiality law (RSA 201-D:11) regarding user record confidentiality. RSA 201-D:11 protects the privacy of all borrowers, regardless of age. The records – including books on hold, titles of checkouts, and reasons for fees – of teens and children who have their own library cards are subject to the same privacy protections as the records of adult borrowers. What do I do if I lose my library card?
Come into the library and replace it! The first library card replacement is $2.00, and each replacement after that is $5.00.
How much does it cost to borrow library items, and how long can I keep them?
You’ll be happy to know that everything you borrow from the library is free, as long as it is returned. All items can be kept for three weeks, except DVDs, which check out for one week. Borrowed items do not accrue late fees, with three exceptions: Museum Passes accrue $5 per day they are late. Unusual Items accrue $5 per day up to the replacement cost of the item. Items borrowed from other libraries can also accrue late fees.
How many items can I take out?
It's up to you! Just remember, other people are waiting on items, so please return them on time. Items that are not returned will be charged a replacement fee. Unusual items, musueum passes, and items borrowed from other libraries will accrue late fees.
Can I ask a friend or family member to pick up my books for me?
Yes, as long as they bring your library card with them.
How can I renew my library materials?
By phone, in-person, or online! Call or visit the library and ask a staff member to renew your materials. Alternatively, log in to your account by visiting our catalog and entering your 14 digit library card number and password. Once logged in, click ‘My Account’ and select the ‘Items Out/Renewals’ tab to review and renew your materials.
Please note that we cannot renew items that have holds on them. Likewise, we need the permission of the lending library to renew interlibrary loans (outside GMILCS). Please give us a couple days of notice that you would like to renew ILLs, so we can contact the owning library before your due date.
What’s my password/PIN?
When you set up an account, you choose your own password which we cannot see (to preserve your privacy.) Forgot your password? Come into the library and we will reset it for you.
My friend downloads digital eBooks and eAudios free from the library. How can I set up my account to begin accessing the digital collection?
From our website, click on Click to find links and instructions to all our electronic resources, including eBooks and eAudios.
What do I do if I can’t find what I’m looking for in your catalog?
We can search for and request books from other NH libraries (Inter-Library Loan) that are not in the GMILCS collection.
If you are interested in a recently published title or would like to make a suggestion for purchase, please let us know! Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or make a request online through your library account. If we decide to purchase your recommendation, it will be placed on reserve for you when it is ready to be checked out.
Is there free Wifi at the library?
Yes! No password is necessary. Our signal reaches out to the front parking lot and adjacent sections of the park as well.
How old do my children have to be to visit the library on their own?
Children 12 years or older can be responsible for themselves in the library. If unaccompanied, they need a contact number where a parent or responsible caregiver can be reached.
Do you have a fax?
We do not have a fax, but patrons may use our public scanner to create digital images to save to a disk or attach to email.
How much does it cost to print from the library computers?
$.15 per page for black and white copies; $.50 per page for color copies
How do I borrow a museum pass?
All you need is to have a Derry Public Library card in good standing. You can request passes yourself through our website, or have a librarian request them for you. Since the passes are date specific, you will need to know what day you are planning to use the pass when you reserve it. To allow everyone a chance to use them, we limit passes to one per household per day. All reserved passes must be picked up the day before, or by 11:00 am on the day of use.
