GMILCS

The Derry Public Library is a member of the GMILCS consortium.

GMILCS is a non-profit consortium of thirteen public and academic libraries in New Hampshire sharing an integrated catalog system, resources, and experience. We work cooperatively to provide access to online resources; because we share, we have more to offer the public we serve.

History
In 1984, NH State Librarian Shirley Adamovich brainstormed, then worked to launch the NH Statewide Union List - an effort to pull together a record of all the books held in all the libraries in NH into one location. Technology and communications at the time weren't sufficient to complete the project, but it did result in the founding of The Greater Manchester Integrated Library Cooperative System, which was comprised of several libraries all using the same circulation computer system.

In 1992 the officers of the Greater Manchester Integrated Library Cooperative System went to Concord to register as a nonprofit organization. Unfortunately, they were told they couldn't use their existing name because in the State of NH you cannot be a cooperative unless you are either a financial organization or an agricultural venue. So they used the first letters of each word in their name and GMILCS, Inc. was born!
