The Derry-Londonderry area had several newsworthy homicides in this period. One was a father who killed his son in Derry. Another was about an enterprising young man from a good family who plotted to acquire a farm by murdering an elderly woman. The search for this suspect reached throughout New Hampshire, Boston and Maine. Because of Pinkerton Academy there is a great bio in the back of the book about Dr. Edward Angell, a leader in early forensic science. And who can resist a tale of Sheriff Marcus Collis who led liquor raids in Derry, Exter, Newton and Kingston in 1903-1906, and was on-scene at the murder scene of the elderly lady mentioned above and worked to prevent a smallpox epidemic in Rockingham County!
