All About Seagulls

Gulls were once described by a medieval Welsh poet as “immaculate loveliness,” but closer to home they are often derided as “dumpster ducks.” No matter where you stand on the subject, there is no arguing that against a leaden gray sky, few sights are more pleasing than a “swift-proud” gull “breasting the combers.” Three species of gull can be encountered in Derry year-round with others making an appearance on the seacoast at various times during the year. Local wildlife enthusiast T.J. Cullinane will share his observations on the Great Black-blacked, Herring and Ring-billed Gulls that frequently transit Derry as well as the more exotic species that sometimes turn up unexpectedly after coastal storms. Highly intelligent and resourceful, you’ll be fascinated by the amazing capabilities of these commonplace birds so often ignored (or worse) by their human neighbors.
