Based on the book Sailing Against the Tide.
Author Carol Busby joins us to talk about Anne Bonny, one of two well known Caribbean female pirates (along with Mary Read). The two women sailed with Calico Jack Rackham who was Bonny's lover. A firey Irishwoman and illegitimate daughter of a lawyer turned plantation owner in the Carolinas, Anne was taken with Rackham, Read and the crew of his ship by Capt. Barnet. She and Mary defended the ship while Rackham and the crew hid downstairs, drunk, until they surrendered. They were tried as pirates and all were convicted and sentenced to be hanged. The men were, in fact, hanged. Anne was allowed to see Rackham in prison before he was executed. She did not give him solace. Instead, she told him that she was sorry to see him there, but if he had fought like a Man, he need not have been hang'd like a Dog."
