Well over 50 species of marine mollusks are commonly encountered on New England beaches. These include a clam that can live for over 500 years and may hold the key to curing Alzheimer’s Disease; a distinctively marked snail that dispatches its victims with neuro-toxin; and a local scallop with 100 gray eyes that can “swim” away from predators. During this fun and engaging presentation, local naturalist T.J. Cullinane will discuss these and many other shells that we commonly encounter during our walks on local beaches. For those who want to come early or stay late, T.J. will help identify any specimens that you care to bring along and will have extra shells on hand for those who want to begin their own collections. T.J. is a long time member of the Massachusetts Marine Educators and serves on the Board of the Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach.
