Backyard Bugs of Derry

Drop by for a talk on the fascinating mini-monsters living right in your own backyard! We share our yards with thousands of insect species. These range from tiny wasps that lay their eggs in living caterpillars, a form of parasitism so ghastly that it made the famous scientist Charles Darwin question his religious beliefs, to dragonflies with 360-degree vision that can fly in any direction and consume dozens of mosquitoes a day. Local naturalist T.J. Cullinane began taking a closer look at local insects during the pandemic lock-downs and was fascinated by what he observed. He’ll provide a quick overview of the many types of insects that live in our yards and offer tips on how to share your observations on online platforms like iNaturalist and the BugGuide.  Contributing to sites like these is great fun for the entire family and allows everyone to become a citizen scientist.
