For teens in grades 6-12! We will first meet in the program room for each of the 3 sessions. We will be walking as a group to the Portsmouth Cemetery up the street, near the park on Turnpike Ave.
Session 1: Monday October 1st - Review a quick presentation and handouts on the history of the Portsmouth Cemetery and learn what some of the symbols and gravestone designs mean. We will be using some resources from Ancestry.com and the RI Historical Cemetery Database. We will walk to the cemetery for the second hour of the session, being back at the library for 6:30 for pickup. Please dress appropriately for walking on grass and if it is cool outside. Teens will pick a stone in the cemetery to photograph, do a rubbing, and work on research.
Session 2: Monday October 15th - Review where we are in our cemetery search and discuss plans for the cemetery visit, including supplies for grave rubbings and to take more pictures. We are hoping to spend the majority of this session at the cemetery.
Session 3: This session will be at the library, in the program room. We will be finishing up our projects, learning some tips on searching through the library's edition of ancestry and working on some artwork (if desired) to the rubbings. Refreshments and treats will be served.
Event registration is required, and sign ups include all 3 sessions.
