T.J. Cullinane comes to the library to talk about John Stark
Though seldom thought of today, when he is recalled, New Hampshire icon and Derry native John Stark is often seen as a “sepia man” bedecked in a fanciful set of buckskins that would give pause to the costume designers at Walt Disney. This quaint imagery belies the savagery of the French and Indian and later Revolutionary War battles where Stark frequently found himself leading inexperienced militia against deadly foes who seldom granted quarter. Yet, despite the terrible odds, Stark more often than not emerged victorious. How was Stark able to accomplish this? And what of his well-known prickly disposition that caused him to resign from the Continental Army at a critical juncture of the war? Was it mere vanity that led to this decision or the need for self-preservation? These questions and more will be examined in length during an upcoming talk led by local author and historian T.J. Cullinane. With a recent quest to the Bennington battlefield fresh in mind and with the latest research in hand, Cullinane will cover these and other points in what promises to be a bright and lively discussion.
